Stamp duty is the amount which is charged by the state governments in Australia in relation to the transfer of land or property.
Working out how much tax to pay can often be a headache and when it comes to stamp duty there is no single standard. Within Australia, each state has its own regulations around stamp duty and how it is calculated. For example a $450,000 home in NSW will attract around $15,390 in stamp duty costs, although the same property in VIC will cost around $18,790 in stamp duty*.
Whether the house you are purchasing is a new build or a pre-existing home can also impact how much stamp duty you need to pay.
In some states, first home buyers have their stamp duty waived so if you think you fall into this category, check to find out what is available to you.
